The East Coast

We packed up and headed out.  This was a long travel day with stops along the way. Our first stop was at Djupivogur. a quaint little fishing village. By the time we got there, all of us needed facilities, especially me. I jumped out and ran into the WC (water closet). The thing was that the WC  was for men or women, and I noted the absence of urinals. I'm beginning to understand that unisex bathrooms are a thing in this country.
We're ready to explore. We took a look around the village and noticed a cute little stand that sold Icelandic hot dogs and salmon sandwiches. We decided this would probably be our lunch place and would meet back there in 45 minutes. We all headed in different directions. Sandy headed down to the docks and had a wonderful conversation with a fisherman. Mary Ellen wandered through the town looking at the restaurants and the different shops. Linda and I set out to find the mineral museum. When we got there and realized what it was, we decided not to go in and set out to walk further along. I had seen an interesting sign that said something about an egg museum, so we headed in that direction. It turned out that the egg museum was a collection of egg shapes on display blocks outside, along the bank of the water. Each egg looked slightly different; they were made of different types of stones. We walked back to our meeting spot and met up with the rest of the group.

Mary Ellen and Kathleen got their sandwiches before we got there. Kathleen had a salmon roll and a tourist actually asked if he could take a picture of it. I also had a salmon roll which really was a smoked salmon sandwich on a hot dog roll. It was very good. As I waited for everyone to finish eating, I was looking around and noticed a pair of boots on the wall with flowers growing out of it. The more I looked around, I saw there were very unusual items with flowers growing out of them. There were more shoes, an old fashioned tea kettle, athletic shoes, and a clothesline with socks hanging from them. The socks also had live flowers!
With lunch finished, we piled back in the car and headed on down the road. The next stop was the Hengifoss hiking trail and waterfall. This is considered to be the tallest waterfall in all of Iceland. Kathleen and Sandy decided they would chill in the van while Linda, Mary Ellen, and I hiked up the trail. It didn't appear to be very steep as we started out, but it was, however, very rocky.  Linda went on ahead as usual. The views on the way up were breathtaking. At one point you could see the water break through the huge area of the basalt columns. This looks like something out of a science fiction book. We hiked a little further hoping  to get to the bottom of the waterfall. Part of the trail was covered by a couple of big boulders that had fallen a few years back. We did eventually catch up to Linda and realized that we were never going to make it to the place where the water first hits the rocks. It was just too rocky, so we all headed back down. Linda went on ahead; she walks a lot faster than I do.  Mary Ellen and I started slowly making our way down. About a third of the way from the end of the trail, rocks rolled under my feet and I fell. Down I went, legs spewed out in front of me, hitting  my bottom on the ground hard. A wonderful man stopped to make sure I was okay. He also helped me get back on my feet. I was feeling very stupid at this point. My ego was bruised more than my bum, and I did manage to scrape my arm as well. At least nothing happened to my camera.
We headed to the hotel in Hofn. Checked in and quickly grabbed a glass of wine before Happy Hour ended.  We met in Mary Elle’s and my room for our own Happy Hour before heading down to dinner in the hotel restaurant.  I ordered a salad with chicken strips on it; these were probably the two tiniest chicken strips I had ever seen. I ordered a couple more;  imagine my surprise when I found out that I had paid $20 for those two extra chicken strips. This is an expensive  country when it comes to food.

Tomorrow we are headed to the Forest Spa Lagoon.
