Travel Day 1

It was travel day so we were island hopping and heading to Kauai.

After dressing, I opened our balcony door to check out the ocean having heard Hurricane Calvin was on the way. I went back in the room to pack but left the door open just slightly. I turned to get something and there was this white dove walking across the room. He was beautiful, but I quickly shooed him out.
With the car called for, we left at 9:30 a.m. wanting plenty of time to get to our 1:30p.m. flight. It was a good thing we did!  We drove to the airport and then remembered we still needed to gas up. I found a station just one and a half miles away. With that done, we dropped off the car and headed into the airport. Hawaii has a very interesting system at the airport. You stand in one line to get your ticket. This is also where they put the tag on your bag if you are checking it. You then take your bag to the drop off point. From there you head to security. All of these area had very long lines.
It happened to me again. I got dinged by that stupid scanning machine for the exact same area of my body.  The security guard then described how she was going to pat me down. She asked if she could do it right there are if I wanted a private place.  I asked for the private room since this was to be a more through search than the one I had in Richmond.  It really was. I was glad that there were two female agents, one to do the search and one to stand guard. I still can’t figure out why I was dinged and neither could they. I was given the advice to stand with my legs farther apart.

With that done, we headed to the plane.  It took more time to get through the airport than to fly to Kauai.

After landing, we went in search of the rental car.  It was a little confusing to follow the signs.  The sign read, “Rental Car On  Rental Car Off”.  listed under each heading were the names of the rental car companies.  We finally figured out that "On" meant it was at the airport and "Off" meant was off site.  While our company was under the "On" side, we still had to take a shuttle to the lot.  Once there, we got the car, loaded it up, and headed to our hotel, Ashton Islander On the Beach. On the way, Kathleen got a text from Captain Andy’s Evening Cruise that said the cruise on Wednesday was canceled due to the rough seas caused by Hurricane Calvin even though it had been downgraded to a tropical storm.
When we checked into the hotel, and I walked into our room I was so happy to see a desk that I didn’t realize there was a king size bed and not two beds.  We took care of that very quickly and settled into a wonderful room on the ground floor.  The room had an awesome view of the ocean and a patio with a table and chairs. The one thing we noticed right away were all of the chickens walking about.  The are feral chickens on this Island.  After settling in this room, Mary Ellen and I headed for a walk on the beach.
A few of us walked across the parking lot to the shopping center to checkout the stores.  Dinner was a kind of do your own thing.
