 Whale Watching

We left a little early, hoping to have some time to check out the town of Husavik.
It rained off and on all through the drive to the Husavik Whale Watching Tour with North Sailing. The route took us through the Vadlaheidar Tunnel which cut off 15 minutes of travel time. It was raining when we arrived which made me a little worried about the whale watching  expedition.  We pulled into a small parking lot, but there were no spaces available and very little room to turn around. But we got lucky. As I was backing up to leave the parking lot, a little car pulled out.  I somehow managed to maneuver the van into that spot.  Mary Ellen and Linda checked us in for our excursion. After getting our tickets, we went over to the whale museum and perused it until our start time.
As we waited to board the boat, I realized that it had stopped raining. We were given waterproof overalls to put over our clothes to help keep us warm.  Sandy couldn't get her zipper to zip up. Mary Ellen helped her and then split open in the middle. She had to switch out her jumpsuit with the help of the deckhand.  After putting mine on, I noticed that a man about my age was putting on his jumpsuit backwards. He didn't realize until after he'd already put his shoes back on and tried to pull it up. His family got a good laugh out of this.
This is the region to see whales, so our guide said.  It is where they are most active as they are feeding. They almost guarantee you that you'll see whales, and whales we saw!  As the boat moved along the water, the guide pointed out puffins flying low in a very erratic way. After about half an hour, the guide saw a water spout in the distance.  The boat headed in that direction. There was a whale almost playing with a smaller boat. It was smacking its flipper on the water, holding two flippers above the water, and doing all kinds of antics.  It dove under the water several times showing its fluke and did a roll right next to our boat, so I was able to snap a picture of his underside. It was amazing to see the whale putting on a show for us! It also swam back and forth under our boat, coming out on each side.
On the way back we were serenaded by a group of Italians. They sounded very good and tried to get us to sing along but since I don’t really know Italian, I just enjoyed listening.  Everybody applauded when they were finished. We were then served hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls as we headed back to the dock. It was great because the hot chocolate really did warm up our hands. The guide said:  “We've had a whale, we've had a concert, we've had it all.”
Went to a place called Salkas for dinner. It was recommended by the young lady that worked at the museum. Most of us had the fish of the day which was cod.  Kathleen ordered the chocolate cake for dessert which came with tons of whipped cream. She took what she wanted and said the rest of it was up for grabs.  Some of us wanted to try it, but we had no utensils. Linda reached over to the next table and grabbed a couple of forks. It was pretty good whipped cream!
It was an hour’s ride back to the hotel driving through the tunnel again.

Back at the hotel, Mary Ellen and I headed out to find ice cream. We started off by asking the front desk person the best place to go.  He looked it up on the internet and gave us the name Brynja.  He said that it was the best in town; it would be a 15- 20 minute walk, and the location was right before the bridge. So, we set off.  We started to wonder where the ice cream was as we walked two parallel streets and were almost to the bridge. Mary Ellen saw a young lady coming our way and asked her for directions. It was just around the corner, and it was a hopping place. You could tell it was a place the locals go for ice cream, the line was back to the door the entire time we were there.  Mary Ellen had a swirl of vanilla and chocolate with Oreo crumbles. I had vanilla with Icelandic licorice candy crumbles and a spoon of caramel. It made for a good combination. We headed back to the hotel.

Tomorrow we head back to Reykjavik.
